Structured Cabling

A structured cabling system is, in one sentence, a cabling system installed to a standard. We work primarily to ANSI/TIA-568, with TIA-569, TIA-598, TIA/EIA-606, J-STD-607, and TIA-758 as supporting references. The value is not the cable — it is that the result can be measured against something.

Four assumptions worth correcting

“Structured cabling costs more.” It does not. Buying a road-legal car costs what it costs; the alternative is not a cheaper car, it is an unregistered one. Cabling to standard is simply the correct way to cable. Brand and category choices move the price — following the standard does not.

“We are only leasing this office for a few years, so we can skip it.” The question for a short-tenancy site is whether to specify Cat 5e instead of Cat 6/6A, whether to use surface trunking instead of dedicated pathways, and which manufacturer to use. It is never whether to install to standard — that is what makes the result testable.

“We are wireless, so cabling does not matter.” Every access point terminates on a cable. Wireless coverage is only as good as the backbone behind it.

“Testing is a formality.” Testing is the entire point. Standards exist so that the money you spent can be verified with numbers. Confirm the contractor calibrates their cable analyser on schedule, check the NVP values are set correctly, agree the test topology in advance — and be present during testing. A PASS or FAIL you watch happen is worth more than a report handed over afterwards.

A note on data centres

Commercial-building cabling standards and data-centre standards share concepts but differ in design. Applying one wholesale to the other is a common and expensive mistake.

Nor does structured cabling require that telephone, data, wireless, CCTV, and access control all share one physical infrastructure. That is Unified Physical Infrastructure — a further step. A cabling system carrying nothing but data is still structured cabling, provided it was installed to standard.
